Slate and Tiled Roofs
K Pendlebury & Sons maintains and replaces slate and tiled pitched roofs for commercial clients across the North West, and we have undertaken heritage work on listed buildings, where matching the original materials and details is a condition of the consent, not a preference.
Maintenance and replacement for pitched roofs
Many commercial portfolios mix flat and pitched roofs, and it is simpler for the client when one contractor looks after both. We maintain and replace slate and tiled coverings, re-fix or renew slipped and broken slates and tiles, and attend to the ridges, valleys, flashings and rainwater goods where pitched roofs most often let water in.
A pitched roof fails slowly and quietly. Slipped slates, porous tiles and failed flashings admit small amounts of water long before a ceiling shows it, so periodic inspection catches at modest cost what neglect turns into timber decay and internal damage. That is why we offer maintenance, not just replacement.
Heritage work on listed buildings
Work on a listed building is different in kind, because listed building consent typically requires the roof to be renewed in materials and details that match the original. Matching means sourcing the right slate or tile, replicating the coursing, the ridges and the leadwork details, and working with conservation officers' requirements rather than around them.
We have undertaken heritage work on listed buildings, and we bring the same working and safety practices to a church or historic school as to a modern warehouse. Our case studies include work on churches and church schools, including the flat roof refurbishment and bespoke rooflight replacement at Bishop Bridgeman CofE Primary and the refurbishment at St. Augustine Catholic Church.
One contractor for the whole roofline
Pitched roof projects rarely stop at the covering. Fascias, guttering and rainwater goods usually need attention at the same time, and our experience extends across the whole roofline, so the scaffolding is used once and the roof is finished once.

Frequently asked questions
Do you work on listed buildings?+
Yes. We have undertaken heritage work on listed buildings, where the roof must be renewed in materials and details that match the original under the terms of the listed building consent.
A few slates have slipped. Do I need a new roof?+
Usually not. Slipped or broken slates can be re-fixed or replaced individually if the fixings and battens underneath are sound. If the survey finds nail fatigue across the roof, wholesale slippage will continue, and we will tell you honestly when replacement is the better investment.
Do you handle both the flat and pitched roofs on one building?+
Yes. We specialise in flat roofing and also maintain and replace slate and tiled roofs, so a building or portfolio with both types can be looked after under one contractor.
Is the survey free for pitched roofs too?+
Yes. Surveys, budget costs and pricing are free of charge for all potential works, pitched or flat.
